Hackney Winter Night Shelter

Hackney Winter Night Shelter offers a hot meal and a warm bed to those in need in Hackney alongside holistic support from a small staff team.

Each year they fill over 3,500 beds from the start of November to the end of March.  The HWNS helps around 70 people every year to find more stable accommodation.

It is a volunteer-led organisation that values the contributions and experience of volunteers from all walks of life.

They receive no up front funding from local or national governments and rely on the donations, grants and fundraising from our patrons and supporters to deliver the service to our guests.

More than 20 years ago a group of Hackney residents and members of Hackney church congregations (some of who had personal experience of homelessness), were thinking about how they could help the people they saw sleeping on the streets around Hackney. They decided that if each member of a group of churches took responsibility for running a shelter for one night of the week, some of those people could be helped and this was the start.

What started as a network of volunteers from local churches has developed into an effective route out of homelessness for many it supports.   Clapton Park United Reformed Church is one of the local churches that hosts the shelter and the organisations staff team are based in our building.
